Luas (Dublin Tram System)

Opened in 2004, the Luas light rail system consists of two lines. The green line runs from St Stephen's Green in the city centre to Bride's Glen in the south east of Dublin. The red line runs from the Point in Docklands and Connolly station, through the city centre and towards Belgard in the south west, where the line branches towards Tallaght and Saggart.

The two lines are not currently joined. The closest points are between St Stephen's Green (Green Line) and Abbey Street (Red Line), a walk of about 15-minutes.

Fares

Fares are calculated on a zone system, as shown in the route maps to the right, with the cost increasing with each zone entered. Journeys starting and ending on zone boundary stops (shown in white on the map) are treated as being in the zone which will result in the lower fare. Outside the central zone, which is shared by both lines, adult fares are slightly more expensive on the green line.

See the individual red line and green line pages for more detailed fare information.

Tickets

Single, return, 7 day and 30 day tickets are available for journeys through specific zones. For regular journeys a smart card can be purchased and loaded with credit which is deducted as the card is "tagged" at the start and end of your journey. Additionally, Flexi Tickets are valid for use anywhere on both lines and can be bought for periods of 1, 7 and 30 days, as can Combi Tickets which can be used on both lines and on Dublin Bus services. Students can get reduced prices on 7-day and 30-day tickets, and fares for children aged 3-15 are reduced on all tickets. Under-3s travel free.

Accessibility

As a modern system, Luas trams and stations on both lines were designed and built with accessibility in mind. Each tram has low-level access, two designated wheelchair spaces and four designated seats for passengers with mobility requirements. On-board announcements give the name of each stop in both Irish and English.
